The worst is yet to come

Against these hardships being felt by the industry, and in particular smallholder farmers, the EU reforming its internal sugar market, and the EU sugar regime is being reformed. This will see the price paid for Swazi sugar fall gradually to a massive 36% cut by 2009.  The cut translates to a loss of a staggering €30 million (about 240 million Emalangeni) per annum in income.  This is 4 times more than Swaziland receives in aid each year from the European Union!

Swaziland knows what needs to be done, and effective action needs to be taken now so that the country, and, in particular, the sugar industry can adequately prepare for the income losses still to come. Lack of action, or even delayed assistance, will have high economic and social costs to the country. These will be in terms of lower revenue, reduced profitability, inability to adequately provide social services, and even more pronounced macroeconomic imbalances.

The Plight of Smallholder Sugar Farmers: PDF Print E-mail
Currently, newly established smallholder sugar farmers pay some 31% of total earnings in interest for both seasonal and capital loans.  In many cases, this leaves insufficient funds to cover even the repayment of the seasonal loan.  This is contributing to growing levels of indebtedness amongst smallholder sugar farmers.  This is proving a direct challenge to the operation of farmer associations as this leaves no income for distribution to members.
