SSA Technical Services provides extension services (advice) on the basis of research output. The Swaziland Sugarcane Production Manual adequately compliments the technical advice to growers and is available to sugarcane growers in English and siSwati at a small fee (the manuals can be obtained from the Technical Services Offices based in Simunye). Extension Officers organize and conduct seminars and training for growers utilising the assistance of subject matter specialists from within the SSA office, SASRI, service providers and suppliers. In addition, SSA Extension Officers undertake regular field visits. The staff compliment of seven Extension Officers made out of five who are directly under the employment of SSA and two seconded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-orperatives (MOAC) is equal to the task of regular farm visits. The schedule of farm visits is regulated by the industry's strategic review for extension in which millers-cum-planters, experienced growers (small and medium scale) and new growers receive 4, 12 and 24 visits per year respectively. For the efficient running of the extension service, the industry has been divided into two regions, the North and South and a senior extension officer heads each. In addition, to the senior extension officers, there are two extension officers in the North and three in the South. For accountability, each one of the officers has his/her own area of responsibility. Currently, SSA is in the process of establishing an industry database. It is anticipated that this system will pin-point extension needs across the industry, on the basis of field performance, anticipated mill deliveries and crop potential. Extension Officers also help to organise a Smallholder Cane Growers' Competition, which is held annually, to encourage good farming practice. In order to encourage participation, prizes are awarded. The Swaziland Crop (sugar) Statistics provides details on each producer's cane age at harvest, sucrose content and cane yield. |
