Includes donations to rural primary schools, donations to charity organisations and contributions to national disasters, and sponsorships for sporting activities (Junior tennis and athletics) The sugar industry is extensively involved in promoting the various aspects of human development in Swaziland. It is indeed contributing towards the required energy to derive some sustenance towards growth and development. The sugar industry responds quickly to natural disasters such as the drought where it brings relief to drought-stricken areas of the country. The industry provides direct employment to about 16 000 people and about 80 000 people benefit from the industry indirectly. The large estates provide free or heavily subsidized medical facilities, housing, electricity and water to employees. Donation for disaster relief As a way of giving back to society, the SSA's has made a donation of E210 000.00 (approx. USD30 000) in the form of food-stuffs and 20 2000 litre water tanks. The donation was handed over to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) in Swaziland, on 24 August 2008. The Agency would forsee to the distribution of the goods according to each area's needs in the country. Donations to rural primary schools and charity organisations In 2009/2010 a sum of E100 000 was donated to four charity organisations with each one of them receiving E25 000. The benefiting organisations were: Federation of the Disabled Persons in Swaziland (FODSWA), Lighthouse, New Hope Centre and Salvation Army. The CEO in his remarks during the presentation highlighted that due to the economic crunch the SSA has been forced to donated to fewer entities than in previous years. In 2008/2009 the SSA folked out the sum of E150 000 (USD21 400). Of this sum, E80 000 (USD11 400) would be shared equally by four charity organisations and the balance of E70 000 shared equally by four rural primary schools. In 2007/2008 E129 000 (approx. USD18 400) was donated to rural primary schools and charity organisations where E45 000 (approx. USD6 400) would be shared equally by three NGOs and the sum of E44 000 (approx. USD6 300) shared equally by four rural primary schools. In 2006/2007 the SSA donated E105 000 (approx. USD15 000) towards the improvement of rural primary schools and continuation of work by charity organisations. E49 000 (approx. USD7 000) being money allocated to seven rural primary schools and E56 000 (USD8 000) to eight NGOs. |
