Charity and Sports Donations

SSA Sweetens
Coffers for 3 Charities and 2 Sport Associations.
The Swaziland Sugar Association
donated E217 000 to 3 charity organisations and 2 sport organizations. The
beneficiaries of charity donations for this year were Hope House, New Hope
Centre & Ministries and Swaziland Hospice at Home who received E40 700
each. Hope House provides residential palliative care support to those affected
by HIV & AIDS and Tuberculosis. New Hope Centre is primarily a
children’s home providing a permanent home to children found to be destitute
without any family, relatives or community members able to care for them. Hospice at Home looks after terminally ill
patients. In the case of Hospice at Home the SSA donation would be used to
purchase a vital sign monitor machine. Beneficiaries
of sports donations were the Athletics Association of Swaziland and the Swaziland
National Tennis Association who received E73 000 and E22 000
respectively.
Speaking during the presentation of
the donations, SSA CEO Dr Mike Matsebula mentioned that charity and sport
organizations form part of SSA investments on activities which have high social
value. In the case of charity organizations this high social value is through providing
the kind of services not ordinarily provided by the public sector and without
which Swazi society would be that much deprived of opportunities for a better
livelihood. They normally take care of the weaker members of society and give
them the dignity deserved by all humanity.
In the case of sport organizations he
indicated that they are vital for building self-discipline and worthwhile
alternatives for the youth as they go through the different stages of
development in their life. He noted that the focus by the youth on sport
activities minimizes their exposure to socially destructive behaviour. He
therefore hoped that the contribution by SSA will energize the sport
organizations into reviewing their operations and activities to have a
dedicated focus on youth development.
The beneficiaries’ representatives
thanked SSA for the donation and assured it that the money would be put into
good use.
Since the beginning of the year SSA
has now donated over E550 000 as part of their Corporate Social
Responsibility programme.
