2008/09 PERFORMANCE REVIEW

In 2008/09 sugar sales revenue indicated that there was an increase by 14,6% to R2,9 billion despite a decline in the total sugar tonnage sold.  Molasses revenue declined slightly to R43 million and this was due to reduction in sales tonnage by 5,3%.

2007/08 PRODUCTION AND MARKETING PERFORMANCE

Despite a slight decline in area cultivated and harvested, total cane production increased by 2.9% in 2007/08 to reach 5.1 million tons from 4.9 million tons the previous year. This was due to increased productivity in the farms. Sugar production also increased by 1.3% to reach 631, 236. This was mainly due to a 3.3% increase in cane yields, which rose from 97.8 tons/hectare to 101.02 tons/hectare. The sucrose content declined marginally from 14.4% to 14.3%.

A total of 626, 730 tons was sold during the year, of which 52% went to SACU, 28% to the EU, 3% to US and 17% to COMESA, with the sales value (inclusive of molasses) reaching E2.53 billion from E2.02 billion the previous year.

EC ACCOMPANYING MEASURES

The SSA continued to participate in and initiate programmes to implement the EC Accompanying Measures (to the EU Sugar Sector Reforms).  The accompanying measures had been offered by the European Union as a means to enable the sugar industry to restructure and adapt to the possible negative implications of the EU sugar sector reforms. The Restructuring and Diversification Management Unit to coordinate the implementation of the accompanying measures was fully established (having operated on interim basis in 2007). Already, over E400 million has been allocated by the EC for supporting smallholder sugarcane growers and to rehabilitate roads and bridges.  Other support programmes are under development.
